Smoking and Alcohol during first trimester?

I missed my period, using the pregnancy calculator I would be just shy of 10 weeks pregnant. I am a mother of 2 and have not felt the typicall pregnancy symptoms as I have in the past. Just don't feel pregnant.
My question is: I have been drinking about twice a week and smoking....if stop now, will this affect the fetus?
Please do not pass judgement on me as you do not know me, I am just looking for someone who has experience with this situation or who may know if it is possible the baby has been harmed.

stop now !!!

The Pregnant Widow (Paperback)

The Pregnant Widow (Paperback)

$15.23

In a virtuosic return to form, Martin Amis revisits the sex-fueled material of his early career such as THE RACHEL PAPERS, DEAD BABIES, and SUCCESS. The political concerns of his recent writing have been, for the most part, jettisoned, and Amis`s famously prodigal prose devotes itself instead to the specific human experience of coming-of-age in the sexually liberated era of the 1970s. The protagonist of the novel, Keith Nearing, is a 20-year-old literary soul aspiring to be a libertine during a summer vacation with a group of friends at an Italian castle. Despite the new freedom of the age and Keith`s witty quips on literature and lust, sex is trickier in practice than in theory, and he finds his desires bent and twisted by the newly empowered bathing beauties tanning themselves poolside at the castle. In the novel`s inspired coda, Amis fast-forwards through the decades after the erotic summer, and shows how the aftereffects of moral revolution rippled out through his characters` lives. An admittedly autobiographical work, THE PREGNANT WIDOW vividly captures the hedonistic fevers of youth in the post-pill, pre-AIDS world, and also depicts those who burned up in its ravishing heat. Keith is damaged by his experiences, but his sister Violet--a clear stand-in for Amis`s own sister--dies from drink and dissolution. Comic, debauched, erudite, and ill-behaved--these are well-known early Amis traits, but THE PREGNANT WIDOW adds a melancholic wisdom to the mix, re-imagining the stories of his youth though the dark glass of time. Selected by Publishers Weekly as a 2010 Top 10 Book.

Nausea

Nausea

$51.97

Nausea is a complex sensation that results from the interaction of certain fixed biological factors, such as gender, with changeable psychological factors, such as anxiety. This is the first book to provide a complete, in-depth explanation of what we know about nausea, along with the latest research results on its causes and treatment. As it is the product of long-term collaboration between scientists from the three main approaches to studying and treating nausea--psychology, gastroenterology, and physiology--the information this book provides is both comprehensive and well integrated. The book is divided into two parts, on mechanisms and management, respectively, and four sections. The chapters in Section I introduce the concept of nausea as a protective control mechanism with individual dynamic thresholds, explain the function of nausea, review past and present conceptions of nausea, and describe the prevalence of nausea in different conditions. Section II includes four basic chapters that review what is known about the physiological bases of nausea. Other chapters explore the roles of the central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, endocrine system, and gastric dysrhythmias. Section III presents the difficult problem of measuring nausea, with chapters focusing on measuring nausea in humans and studying it in animals. Section IV forms the second part of the book, on the management of nausea. The main chapters cover nausea and its treatment in several conditions, including chronic nausea, diabetes, pregnancy, post-operative, cancer and its treatment, and provocative motion. A final chapter discusses future research, including three preliminary studies of novel treatment approaches.

Can you have lots of pregnancy symptoms the 1st time, and none with the 2nd baby?

My 1st pregnancy I KNEW at 3 weeks along because of my symptoms (sore bbs, nausea, light cramping). Last month I had a chemical pregnancy and all the same symptoms. This month I got a faint positive again (2 days ago) but I have absolutely NO symptoms and I think it will end up as a chemical pregnancy again. But I'm hopeful it will stick.

Can you have lots of pregnancy symptoms the 1st time, and none with the 2nd baby?

Yes absolutely. No two pregnancy's are the same, even within the same woman.

Good luck, I hope this turns out for the best!

Is it better to have a C-section or natural birth?

Obviously, I am a young (20 year old) woman who is pregnant and is scared of the delivery. I have a disorder where I tend to pass out A LOT. Even with the poke of a needle, I am out on the floor. My doctor says that I'll be fine giving natural birth and he will only consider a C-section only if I can't deliver naturally, or otherwise, already passed out. My husband is extremly scared for me, and I want to reassure him that everything will be okay, but I don't know what to tell him. Can anyone give me some kind of reassurence that natural birth isn't all that bad?

the last month of pregnancy is so miserable that I promise you, you will do anything to not be pregnant anymore. That alone makes labor and delivery welcome.

Women were meant to deliver babies naturally. The vast majority of C-sections done are unnecessary and it is really quite sad that convenience rules over common sense and safety. For most women and babies, natural births are safer.

Anytime you have a surgical procedure you run a risk of dying from anesthesia or infection or other complications. So I would certainly recommend you avoid it unless you have no choice.

Your most pleasurable delivery would likely occur with a MIDWIFE in a hospital. That's the best of both worlds. Unlike a doctor, a midwife will stay with you the whole time, help keep you comfortable and be there to answer any of your questions. She can help assure a pleasant natural birth, and still you are in the hospital should you need a c-section or another emergency crops up.

I have assisted (as a coach) in several friends' deliveries though my 3 were all c-sections (and each unplanned and unquestionably necessary), so I have seen it done a lot of ways. Induced labor is the most miserable, but these days they can give you pain meds that can make it a lot more comfortable.

Don't panic. You were built to have babies even if you are tiny (one friend is 4'10" and 90lbs not pregnant and she had very easy, big babies naturally).

I would do some homework and find out if you can get a midwife. I think the reassurance of a woman by your side that is knowledgeable will be very helpful to you, your husband and your baby.

The Art of Giving Birth (PACKAGE)

$13.09

A guide to help women find the joy and confidence needed for successful childbirth • Provides breathing and vocalizing exercises for use during pregnancy and labor • Contains inspiring stories from women who successfully applied these techniques • Includes a 26-minute CD of tambura music to accompany the singing exercises Giving birth is a veritable “explosion” of joy. The baby arrives when the life force surges up so strongly in the woman that it breaks all limitations in order to spring forth. But in our modern culture, women often do not feel empowered to give birth by themselves. They want the “experts” to handle the birth for them, out of fear of the pain or the possible safety risks to them or the baby.   Dr. FrIdIrick Leboyer, author of the groundbreaking book Birth without Violence, which looks at birth from the baby’s point of view, now explores the birth process from the mother’s perspective. Through the heartfelt letters of women sharing their experiences, which are accompanied by his advice and commentary, he reveals how women can develop the skills needed to create a successful and joyful birth. Dr. Leboyer stresses that proper breathing is the most important component for women going through childbirth. The breathing should come from the lower belly and the exhalation should be accompanied by a musical tone. Without this musical dimension, breathing is merely a physical exercise. Dr. Leboyer found that by using the music of the tambura, an Indian stringed instrument whose tones represent the embodiment of universal harmony, women are transported to a place of inner peace. The Art of Giving Birth includes breathing and singing exercises and gentle movements to be practiced throughout pregnancy and during labor. Also included is a 26-minute CD of tambura music to accompany the exercises.

The show responded quickly and her story will be told as the season 2 finale in a special 90-minute episode aired in December 2010. Educational Experiences of Hidden Homeless Teenagers (Paperback)

Educational Experiences of Hidden Homeless Teenagers (Paperback)

$32.75

"Homeless youth face countless barriers limiting their ability to complete a high school diploma and transition to postsecondary education. Their experiences vary widely based on family, access to social services, and where they live. More than half of the 1.5 million homeless youth in America are in fact living "doubled-up," staying with family or friends because of economic hardship and often on the brink of full-on homelessness. Educational Experiences of Hidden Homeless Teenagers investigates the effects of these living situations on educational participation and higher education access. First-hand data from interviews, observations, and document analysis shed light on the experience of four doubled-up adolescents and their families. The author demonstrates how complex these residential situations are, while also identifying aspects of living doubled-up that encourage educational success. The findings of this powerful book will give students, researchers, and policymakers an invaluable look at how this understudied segment of the adolescent population navigates their education"-- Provided by publisher.

Serious leg cramps and spasms 37 weeks pregnant. ?

I am pregnant with my 3rd child..and im 37 weeks along. I am experiencing things I never have before with my other two pregnancies. Both were full term and healthy. This time around, I have alot of pains. When I walk I get a mix of them, the first being cramps/charlie horses in my thighs that are shooting pains and make my legs spasm. The only relief is to sit down. Now that i am bigger (which everyone tells me i am carrying small and all belly) When i walk i get sharp shooting pains in my "crotch" that almost has a burning sensation. It's similar to the feeling of having a UTI and pee'ing. It gives me a burning urge to urinate but it goes away so quickly. If i stand still, it goes away..if i walk..it starts all over. So im wondering if any other woman experienced these pains and if they had good advice on how to deal with it.
Suprisingly i see its normal especially at night to get leg cramps but at night im fine, its only when i walk.

I had with my first pregnancy and have again with my second, the leg cramps and charlie horses. My ob said take potassium and calcium. I found an over the counter combination of the two of them at Walmart and it has definitely helped. Also, (sounds like an old wives's tale, but it works and my ob said that he had heard of it and gave me his theory why he thinks it works) as soon as I feel a leg cramp coming on, I take a cold metal object (I use a big metal ladle / serving spoon) and put it directly on the spot where the cramp is starting. It seems to divert the shocking/electric type pain and keeps the cramp from coming on. I keep a big spoon on my night stand, too, because it seems to be worse when I am good and asleep and it definitely helps.

As for the crotch pain, your baby is dropping and lying on nerves that lead to and from that area.
