Is it just me, or are there a disturbing number of young girls on here with pregnancy scares?
I was just thinking about all the HIGH SCHOOL girls that come on here every day, thinking they may be pregnant. Does the high number alarm anyone else? Maybe the school and parents need to accept the fact that very young girls are having sex and need to teach them about STD's, pregnancy, and protection. I mean, some of these girls are so young they aren't even sure what it takes to get pregnant. Your thoughts?
Hm, maybe. I agree with you, I think the main cause of teen pregnancy is ignorance and lack of information/lack of access to information. If a teen isn't getting accurate information about sex from a reliable source, they'll go to other sources that might not be as reliable. At my school (which incidentally, teaches abstinence-only sex education) there are several pregnant teens and teen moms, and more than a few of them say they concieved because they didn't use birth control, thinking they couldn't get pregnant on their first time. Sometimes parents delay the sex talk because they think that their kid isn't having sex and won't have sex anytime soon, so they think they can put it off. In my opinion, a kid should be given "the talk" as soon as they can handle it, maybe a bit after puberty starts, or when they're going to that age where they will get curious about sex, where they start hearing about it. Would you rather your kid learn about sex from you, or from their friends who say "you can't get pregnant standing up"? The parents may not always want to accept that their teen will start having sexual feelings, maybe they still see them as children. Just as well, with me never getting the sex talk or a decent school sex education, I learned everything from Seventeen magazine. They have a lot of good articles on birth control and teen pregnancy. Studies have shown, time and time again, leaving teens in the dark about sex with either "abstain before marriage!" or not discussing the issue entirely actually INCREASES the teen pregnancy rate. Several studies show that teens who pledge to abstain are just as likely to have sex as teens who don't, but far less likely to use BC and thus far more likely to get pregnant. Then of course, maybe BC could be more available. In my opinion, people need to be more open about sex. Even if a parent is okay with their teen having sex, it's still akward for a lot of people and a teen might feel nervous about asking for birth control, or they don't know where to look. I have a lot of opinions on the subject...
